Freedom (from what?)

What is freedom in Christ?

To be free we have to be free from something. To be free we have to be captive first. So what are we captive to. The bible talks about being enslaved. The conservative view is we are enslaved to sin,the liberal view is we are a slave to the law.

They are both right. We are a slave to the tyranny of the flesh. Our desires control us and on our own we are helpless to resist. We want what we want and can’t control ourselves. If we deny it we are simply lying to ourselves and if we believe the lye we are a fool.

We are also a slave to the tyranny of the law. We know what is right, we have a standard and hold others to it. We try to maintain that standard in ourselves and feel guilty when we don’t. If we don’t feel guilty we are an even a bigger fool.

So what is the answer? We will be a slave, a slave to Christ. But with Christ there is no tyranny, there is only love and compassion. We are a bond servant paid for with blood and set free, not after a period of time, we don’t earn our freedom. If we earned it by not being bad ( the flesh), or by being good (the law) then why the cross?

Freedom in Christ is the freedom to be a slave to the only good master. The master who serves His slaves and adopts them and gives them His kingdom as an inheritance forever.

But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever. Exodus 21:5-6
